A Florida panther's intense gaze makes for a striking portrait of an endangered species. Photographed in captivity at the Babcock Ranch near Fort Myers, Florida, this panther represents the estimated 160-plus wild panthers still roaming in the Sunshine State. The 92,000 acre Babcock Ranch in southwest Florida protects some of the best wetland and wildlife habitat in the state. It is also the site of heated debate over its future as a ranch, nature preserve, housing development, or combination of the above.
